Goals
The project’s goals are as follows:
-
To improve the youth’s everyday functioning: decrease risk and negative behavior, rehabilitate self-esteem and boost self-confidence and sense of capability.
-
To impart life skills and competencies: improve discipline and self-control, the ability to cope with unexpected challenges, overcome failures and frustrations, and cooperate with others.
-
To promote long-term social inclusion: decrease feelings of social and communal alienation, strengthen their sense of belonging, and integrate them in mainstream society through normative family, educational and occupational tracks.
-
To steer the youth back on track to continue their lives as positive and productive individuals.
Our eye-opening rehabilitation program takes youth at risk far away from their familiar surroundings, into the fold of surfing, and uses its obstacles (the sea and the waves) to teach them to cope with the barriers and difficulties in their lives. It draws them into unfamiliar territory where they encounter new challenges to deal with and discover abilities within themselves, they did not know they had.
