Project

The proposed program introduces youth at risk from religious communities to surfing and develops their social and emotional skills. Both the process of surfing and the supportive culture that is created through counseling, mentoring and peer networks lead participants to develop a positive and optimistic outlook on life.

The 3-month rehabilitation program serves approximately 140 youth from Bnei Brak and Jerusalem who will partake in 2 weekly sessions of 1.5-2 hours in small groups of up to 10-12 participants. Activities are held at the Bat Yam beach and include organized and supervised transportation.

The workshop teaches the basics of surfing and surfing techniques such as jumping, standing, maintaining balance, breathing and oxygen retention, sea properties, solving problems in stressful conditions and first aid.

It also instils familiarity with the equipment. Surfing instructors conduct personal and group conversations, offer the youth a listening ear and emotional support, and provide them guidance on issues related to their lives and personal challenges. Once the three-month program concludes, the youth are encouraged to continue to surf with the others and meet up as a form of ongoing support group.
